#10 Take 2 for 3

For years, Liberty Utilities has promoted Take 2 for 3 strategy as a key strategy for approaching your work. With this approach, you take 2 minutes to

  • Assess for Hazards
  • Know Your Stop Work Criteria
  • Ensure You Have Reviewed All Safety Protocols

Step 1 is assessing for hazards, because focusing only on the task can create tunnel vision. Follow the three steps below to assess the AREA first, then look at the EQUIPMENT, and finally consider the assigned TASK.

AREA
Stop at a distance from outside work areas or at the threshold for inside work to survey all adjacent areas to the side, above, and below for hazards which could impact you. Also consider if your work could negatively impact the area or environment.

EQUIPMENT
Narrow your focus to the equipment you will be working on. Identify the potential hazards. Is it accessible, energized, contaminated? Are there thermal concerns? Could your work impact service, the environment, or safety of others?

TASK
Narrow your focus again to the specific assigned task. Are you equipped, trained, and mental and physically capable to properly execute the work?

When you first reach your work area, Take 2 for 3. Assess your hazards by focusing on the area, then the equipment, then the task. Know under what conditions you will call a stop work. And ensure you have reviewed any safety protocols that will help you perform this work safety.

Each time you approach your work area after the initial assessment, look around to determine if conditions have changed and ensure your mitigation plans remain effective.

Sign Up For The 60 Day Habit Challenge

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because we’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
