Pre-Job Brief Mastery

#14 Leaders Are Made

"Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.” Vince Lombardi

I use a very simple definition of leadership. In my mind, a leader is someone who influences people. That’s it. It’s that simple. And what that means is that…

YOU ARE A LEADER.

Whether you want to or not, you are influencing the people you work with. The only question is what kind of influence do you want to have? What kind of leader do you want to be?

For the past couple months, we’ve focused on increasing the amount of interaction you are having with your coworkers during the pre-job brief. The pre-job brief isn’t about you knowing everything and pointing out all the problems. It’s not a presentation or a speech to the troops. The pre-job brief is a conversation. Together you make a plan. Together you identify hazards. Together you decide what to do if certain things happen.

This is important, because it’s the engagement that activates the prefrontal cortex, and your prefrontal cortex is one of the most powerful safety tools you have. Unfortunately, you are much less likely to use it the more familiar you are with a task, a place, or person.

During the Part 2 training, we spent a lot of time talking about questions, because a well asked question can only be answered by the pre-frontal cortex. I recorded a video on complacency and tips for asking better questions.

And I collected all the questions that came up during our training sessions. You can find that here: https://habitmasteryconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Liberty-Utilities-Favorite-Questions.pdf

Creating this new habit of asking questions and engaging with your coworkers during the pre-job brief may not be easy. In fact, it may even be hard. That’s ok. You’re used to hard work. It’s what you do best. As you pursue this goal, let’s remember this other quote by Vince Lombardi…

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

Keep up the good work on catching an excellent pre-job brief.

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because we’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
