Pre-Job Brief Mastery

#2 The Big Why

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because they’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

This proved to be true for a Liberty Utilities crew out doing electric service restoration work after a storm. During the pre-job brief, the crew recognized that avalanche conditions were possible. They planned that if certain conditions existed, they needed to stop work. As they worked, they noticed those conditions forming, and they made the call to pull the crew instead of finish the job. Less than an hour after the decision was made, an avalanche plowed down on the very spot where the crew truck and work zone had been staged.

There is some science to back up the power of the job brief. In a study in the medical field, 37 teams were asked to perform a simulated rapid-sequence induction in a simulator. The teams were presented with a “cannot ventilate, cannot oxygenate” scenario that would ultimately require a cricothyroidotomy. A cricothyroidotomy involves making an opening on the front of the neck to establish an airway for oxygenation and ventilation. This is a rarely performed procedure, but when needed, it’s life-saving.

Some of these medical teams were asked to perform a briefing prior to starting the scenario, while other teams were asked to perform their usual routine. The teams who performed the briefing were significantly quicker to recognize that a cricothyroidotomy was necessary, and they provided this life saving treatment sooner. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC6921421/

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
