Pre-Job Brief Mastery

#3 5 Key Times to Conduct a Pre-Job Brief

You already have a full day of work, so where does the pre-job brief fit into your day? The first thing to remember is that the pre-job brief is work. It’s not what happens before you start working. It is work.
Your day likely starts with pre-planning as you review your work package and scope of work. You’re using this time to assemble your resources, consult subject matter experts, check permits, and gather materials and tools.

Then you mobilize. You’re loading vehicles, planning your route to the work zone, planning your parking strategy, evaluating your work zone needs, and inspecting vehicles and equipment prior to departure. Then it’s time for the pre-job brief. You gather the crew to review the work activities and permits. You facilitate a discussion as everyone helps identify and control hazards, anticipate challenges, and agree upon stop criteria. You’re soliciting questions, checking for understanding, holding one-on-one conversations with your team to check on their work readiness, and you’re coordinating and collaborating with workers who may not be on your team but are working in your area.

But this is not the only time you might conduct a pre-jo brief. You monitor the situation as you’re working. As things change, you may call a stop work, bring the team together, and complete another pre-job briefing.
If no stop work is necessary and you complete the task, then it’s time to complete the pre-job briefing form. As you de-mobilize, bring the team together to debrief. Did everything go as planned? What worked/what didn’t? What could we have done differently? Any good catches to share?

There are 5 times during your day, when you might be doing the work of completing the pre-job brief.

  • Prior to starting any work activity.
  • When assignments have changed or new personnel are involved.
  • A change in work scope, change in work zone boundary/ limits, change in materials, utilities uncovered, time constraints, facility or work area conditions, weather and/or environment.
  • Work actives are resumed after an extended period of inactivity.
  • End of job

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because we’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
