Pre-Job Brief Mastery

#4 Level Up

No doubt you already involve your team in the pre-job brief, but the question is… Where can you take it up a notch? How can you make what you’re already doing better?

One habit you could work on is asking a specific question. For example, if you really liked the question, “What’s different today from the last time you did this?”, then incorporating this into your pre-job brief would be a great habit to create.

Do you have a good sense of what’s going on with your team and their level of work readiness? You could work on making a habit of having more one-on-one conversations with people.

Do visitors get briefed on the tasks and hazards? If not, you could make a habit of assigning that responsibility at the end of the pre-job brief.

Are you monitoring the work, environment, and people as the task is being completed for changes in scope, weather, proximity of other teams, and the work readiness of your team? If there’s opportunity for improvement here, then this would be a great habit to work on.

Are you making the most of your demobilization? Asking your team questions like, “What worked the way we thought it would? And what didn’t?”, can help everyone learn, adapt, and identify hazards more quickly.

Do you spend enough time thinking about what else can go wrong? Perhaps you could add some time for devil’s advocate questions to the end of the pre-job brief to explore if you’ve missed anything that could cause problems.

Whichever way you can level up, remember that you have The Habit Challenge App to help you succeed. It will literally take you 5 seconds of your workday to interact with the challenge/ I hope you will take advantage of this resource and give yourself the best chance at incorporating this new skill into your daily job briefing.

You can find instructions on how to access and install The Habit Challenge App on the second to last page of the training guidebook.

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because we’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
