Pre-Job Brief Mastery

#5 The Hard Part

"Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it." Horace Mann, author “The Art of Teaching

During the habit creation process, it’s normal to feel a sense of discomfort. You might also get bored, distracted, or even irritated. Creating a habit of more discussion during your pre-job brief might start to feel unimportant, because you’ve done this type of work so many times that you know what to expect.

That may be enough to throw other people off, but you have two things going in your favor. First, you know that increasing the number of people on your team who participate in the pre-job brief and the quality of that participation is one of the most important tools you have for keeping yourself and your team safe.

Second, the Habit Challenge is helping you stick with your new behavior long enough to make it a habit. Habit creation may not be an easy process, and it might not be a straight line. It’s very common to string a few days together that feel easy only to struggle for a few days. Or even forget a few days. That’s ok. When that happens you just pick it back up.

The good news is that as the neural pathway gets deeper, asking more questions during your pre-job brief is going to become like second nature. You won’t have to think about it. You won’t have to make extra time for it or make an effort or try to figure out what questions you want to ask. It will just be how you naturally approach planning your tasks.

Liberty Utilities has invested a significant amount of time and energy to develop a consistent process for conducting a pre-job brief, because we’ve identified it as one of the most important tools for conducting work safely.

We hope you’ve been inspired to have more engagement and ask more questions during the pre-job brief, but we also know that inspiration is not enough. Creating a new habit is hard, and that’s why this training is partnered with The 6- Day Habit Challenge.

The Habit Challenge app will help you remember to practice this new skill until it becomes an easy and natural part of how you approach your work.

On March 31st or April 28th, Sharon Lipinski will be online to walk you through getting the app installed and starting the challenge. Both sessions start at 2pm Eastern and last for 30 minutes.
